canadian label silent season continues its mission to marry modern electronic music processes with the ancient nature of the label s base on vancouver island, this time turning to mosam howieson to deliver a four track ep of ambient techno experimentation. the melbourne-based artist has a unique approach that should appeal to lovers of heavyweight bass pressure and subtle, moody cinematics, not least on opening track i. there s a submerged acid throb to ii, but only after time spent lingering in a beatless reverie. loaded with surprises at every turn, this record has a lot of depth that should it rewarding faithful listeners for a long time to come.

two years since their debut release together, ansome & ossian combine again, this time on their own label. “butch” and “buck” go in very hard as does the remix from ayarcana with pdl doing a proper job on “buck” turning it into a dance floor creeper.

segun bucknor fell in love with american soul music as a student at new york’s columbia university. otis redding, wilson pickett, sam cooke and ray charles hadn’t made much of a splash in africa at the time and when bucknor returned to nigeria in 1968, he was determined to bring the sound to a wider audience.
the result was brand of afro-soul that in turn became a proto-type of afrobeat. with his bands, the assembly and the revolution, he released a few politically charged tracks, but even with his energetic dance trio, the sweet things, turning up the heat, bucknor couldn’t compete with fela kuti.

the label from avion comes with its 9th installment releasing a full single ep from the canadian artist duo ’the automatic message’. the release starts with ’tessellation’ which brings up a dreamy atmosphere turning into a floor bomb with crashing analog snares a pushing drum and driving rides never losing its fragile built atmosphere. the b-­&#8208,side comes with a rough and storming track ’paint by numbers’ full of noises and driving percussions forming a killer of function to move the floor. closing the release with the ’towers of hanoi’ an acidic techno track creating an outer space full of noises and effects for special people in special locations leaving the world to be surreal.

james dexters star has been rising for a while now - the young brit turning out killer tracks regularly on the back of hugely well received dj sets. on his second outing for dessous recordings, dexter does what he does best - four slices of deep, funky and vibing house music for the floor. lead track drift is typical of dexters flair for subtle, edgy sounds, wrapped inside a warm and inviting groove. elements come and go, but the shuffling, infection feel runs throughout. take me is a more upfront vibe with a seriously bumping groove - dexter clearly well versed in the roots of house music from chicago. ‘whose rules ?’ is a snappy, bright and lively production, with a sub bass that will troubler some of the world’s best club systems in the coming months. the light, jazzy vocals offsets the groove perfectly - sure to be a big tune for a wide variety of djs. the last track of the release is disco deep - and it pretty much does exactly what it says - a swung, groovy feel punctuated by disco claps and balearic flourishes that will sound as good on the beach as in the basement.

fleeting wax hits its third release with this bout of sinister, sleek disco for the darker dancefloor that finds bucharest-based duo valeriu borcos and eduard gabia getting remixed from a strong cast of characters. the ever prolific khidja is up first, turning -choose your colour gypsy dark- into a brooding, almost-rocking affair with an irresistible noirish tint to it. the label heads then get busy with a version that ups the arpeggios in a nod to italo amidst plenty of dubby fx, before mehmet aslan stretches out across the b-side with a more yearning version that lets a little light in on the situation. it s a diverse, potent bag of versions that do credit to the original while saying something new as well.
